Arbutus is a small-lot, small-house community in southwest Baltimore County with a university on one side and the Beltway on the other. UMBC, the Halethorpe MARC station and the I-95/I-695 interchange all sit within a couple of miles of East Drive, and about 21,700 people live here in bungalows, Cape Cods, and the apartment complexes that serve the campus. County business is handled in Towson.
Local moving rates in Arbutus
Our local moving rate is $185 per hour with a four-hour minimum. That covers the truck, the crew, protective wrap, dollies and straps, and the drive between your two addresses. Flat-rate quotes are available for long-distance moves and single-item jobs.
The four-hour minimum is not a sales tactic. It is close to what a real move takes once you count the walk from the truck to the door, the wrap-and-pad time at the front end, and the reassembly at the other end. What moves the number up or down is access — stairs, parking distance, elevator waits — far more than square footage. Send us both addresses and we will give you a real figure.
What we handle in Arbutus
Student and staff turnover at UMBC means Arbutus gives us a lot of small, quick jobs: a one-bedroom, a shared house, a single heavy piece. We price those honestly rather than padding them out.
- Labor-only loads and unloads for rental trucks and containers
- Apartment, condo and house moves anywhere in the region
- Single-item moves for the one thing that will not fit in the car
- Property-manager turnovers between tenants
- Junk removal and whole-house cleanouts
- Downsizing help for a move into a smaller place
- Long-distance moves by flat rate
What we plan for in Arbutus
UMBC and August turnover
The apartment complexes along Wilkens Avenue and Sulphur Spring Road turn over heavily in late summer, and campus housing has its own move-in windows. If your date is in August, book early; we cannot conjure trucks the week before the semester starts. Smaller apartment moves near campus often fit the four-hour minimum comfortably.
Old East Drive and the narrow streets
The original Arbutus blocks around East Drive are tight, with alleys behind and cars parked on both sides. A full-size truck can get in, but not always to the door. We look at the block before quoting and will bring a shorter truck when that is what the street calls for.
Halethorpe and the rail line
The south end toward Halethorpe has industrial cross-streets, low railroad bridges and a few roads where a 13-foot box truck should not go. We route around them. The MARC Penn Line station at Halethorpe also makes Arbutus a common landing spot for people who work downtown or in Washington.
Three interstates in one corner
I-95, I-695 and I-195 all meet just south of Arbutus, which makes it one of the easiest places in the county to get a truck in and out of, as long as we are not loading during the evening peak on the Beltway. Catonsville and Glen Burnie are both minutes away outside those hours.
