Two things customers ask us about constantly that we don’t do ourselves. Rather than shrug, here’s who we send people to and what you should know before you call them.
Shipping a car
If you’re moving out of state and there’s a second vehicle, or a car that isn’t getting driven, it goes on a truck. That’s a different licence and a different kind of carrier than household goods, so we don’t haul vehicles ourselves.
We point customers to All America Auto Transport. We’ve worked with them, they handle the vehicle end, and you deal with them directly.
What to ask any auto transporter before you book:
- Open or enclosed? Open is the standard and it’s what most people use. Enclosed costs meaningfully more and is for a car you’d be upset to see a stone chip on.
- Is that a real pickup date or a window? Most auto transport runs on a multi-day window, not an appointment. Plan for the window, not the best case.
- What’s their cargo coverage, and what’s the deductible? Get the number in writing.
- Broker or carrier? Both are legitimate, and it changes who actually shows up. Ask outright.
- Photograph the car before it loads. All four sides, the roof, the odometer, timestamped. This is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself.
Coverage for your belongings
This is the one people find out about too late, so read this part.
A mover’s basic liability is not insurance. Every moving company carries a legally required baseline level of liability for the goods it moves, and on most moves that baseline is calculated by weight, not by what a thing is worth. A 10-pound laptop and a 10-pound bag of books are treated identically. That is the industry standard and it is genuinely not enough for anyone with a television, a computer, or anything they actually care about.
If you want real coverage, you buy it separately, from a company whose business is insurance.
We point customers to Moving Insurance, LLC in New Jersey — 973-453-4033. You purchase directly from them, the policy is between you and them, and Mosby Movers is not a party to it. We don’t sell insurance and we don’t take a cut. We just got tired of watching people learn this the hard way.
Worth knowing before you buy:
- Buy it before move day. Coverage bought after something breaks is not coverage.
- Read what’s excluded. Most policies treat items you packed yourself differently from items the movers packed.
- Photograph the valuable things beforehand. Serial numbers on electronics. It takes ten minutes and it’s the difference between a paid claim and an argument.
- High-value items get declared. Art, instruments, jewellery, collections. If it isn’t on the list, it isn’t covered at its value.
- Ask us for our liability terms in writing. Any mover should hand those over without hesitating. If one won’t, that tells you something.
Straight talk
Neither of these companies pays us anything and we aren’t selling you either one. We recommend them because customers need both services, we don’t provide them, and pointing you somewhere decent costs us nothing.
If you’d rather we just handled the move and you’ll sort the rest out yourself — that’s completely fine too.
